MONDAY MOVIE – 7TH APRIL in St Mary’s, Olveston.
April’s film is a 2024 Disney Dreamworks animated production. Nominated for three Oscars and 124 other awards, it is perhaps the best film of the year.
A ship carrying intelligent robots sinks. One of these robots, Roz, is washed up on a desert island and, never having encountered wild animals before, must learn to co-exist with them, even with a very cunning fox called Fink, an enemy at first but later a trusted friend.
Roz is programmed to help and assist everything, and though she tries to engage with the animals and birds, none will have anything to do with her at first.
Nevertheless, Roz does manage to raise a gosling, Brightbill, despite unintentionally having killed its mother. Eventually, and despite Fink’s best efforts to make Brightbill a tasty meal, Roz teaches her to fly.
Danger looms when less likeable robots land on the island intent on terminating Roz. Don’t worry; there will be a happy ending!
The heart of this film is “parenthood,” especially “motherhood,” with allusions to climate change.
It is outstanding in every department: originality, graphics, plot, voice-overs, and the characters themselves. It is totally unmissable.
Everyone is welcome to the Monday Movie Club. There is no entry charge, though we always appreciate donations.
